Opus Adventures - Mountain Bike Tours

The Opus Team
Opus Adventures is owned and operated by people who love to be out there with you. Our guides and assistants are not just staff, but our friends whom we have travelled extensively with. Most of us have roots in the field of volunteer mountain search and rescue that developed (or was caused by) an outdoor lifestyle. We are not just bikers, we are also travellers that have experienced the rough and tumble of adventure biking. Some of us have more metal than bone in their skeleton and have broken a few of their bikes through the years. All of us agree that mountain biking is an exhilarating way of traveling across the remote parts of the Icelandic interior and coastline. It offers longer days than traditional trekking or hiking trips and with the wind in your ears and your front suspension-fork eating the rocks and bumps you will also experience the excitement. Give it a try – we guarantee your satisfaction.

Pétur Ađalsteinsson 37 years old | petur@opusadventures.is
A co-founder of Opus Adventures and the company‘s managing director. Has degrees in geography and economics and as with his education he has worked in various fields. Former assistant director of the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue, an asset management director for a local investment bank, a trekking guide for old Iceland Safari, the Icelandic Travel Company and more companies, not mentioning his career in his grandfather‘s paintbrush factory from the age of 12 to 15. Being man of many trades you will find him as often doing the luggage transporting and cooking as guiding on our trips. Like many of his friends he has roots in the Kópavogur scout mountain rescue team since 1990. He is a keen all-around traveler and has taken part in mountaineering expeditions in the european Alps, the Tien Shan mountains of Asia, Greenland, Africa and more during the past twenty years. Pétur lives in Selfoss, is married to Urđur Skúladóttir and has two sons, named Óttar and Ćgir.

Urđur Skúladóttir 29 years old | urdur@opusadventures.is
A co-founder of Opus Adventures, a guide and our medical specialist. Has a degree in nursing, a truck and bus driver licence and makes use of both in her career as an emergency medical technician in the ambulance department of the local hospital in Selfoss. As a former white-water rafting guide and a national champion in women's Judo she is definitely not faint-hearted and pretty aggressive on the trail. Only half the weight of her husband she is a better biker but to her opinion a less of a cook! You will find her doing both guiding, luggage transporting and cooking on our trips and she does it all well. She has taken part in many of the expeditions with her husband, Pétur Ađalsteinsson, and is the mother of Óttar and Ćgir.

Urdur
Sigurđur Ólafur Sigurđsson (Siggi) 35 years old | sigosig@opusadventures.is
A co-founder of Opus Adventures, an enthusiastic mountain biker, the bike geek of the team and the guide on most of our hardest trips. When not mountain biking in Iceland you'll find him riding the european alps or stuck by one of the metal detectors arguing with security because of his many metal bone fixings. Siggi is the Director of the Icelandic Rescue School, a lead instructor for search as well as an active instructor in search management, navigation and wilderness survival and a member of the National Search and Rescue Commands Operational Team. He‘s a keen photographer and the man behind most of the pictures on this web site and the web site itself. He has been biking, mountaineering and traveling for as long as he remembers. Siggi and Pétur have been friends since they joined the Kópavogur scout mountain rescue team together in 1990 and have traveled extensively together and apart both in and out of Iceland. Siggi lives in Kópavogur, is married to another outdoor person, Erla Björk Jónsdóttir and has one daughter, Lukka Mörk.

Atli Már Markússon, 29 years old
An Opus Adventures guide. Atli states that “nothing is better than riding in the rain” and after a few bike trips to the Alps he is convinced the Icelandic rain is the best there is. He has been involved in search and rescue since 1997 when he joined the Kópavogur scout mountain rescue team and has since been involved in various activities regarding SAR, touring and mountaineering. Atli used to work for the Icelandic association for search and rescue, ICE-SAR, ran a search and rescue summer school for teenagers to get involved in SAR and worked as a hiking and a super jeep guide. For the last few years he has been working as a professional emergency medical technician for a local ambulance service with Urđur in Selfoss and holds a wilderness EMT degree. With a record of having broken no bones, yet, he is a reliable rider who gets his kicks carrying enough bandages and pain killers for Siggi when they are riding together. Atli lives in the north, in Húsavík, just a few miles south of the arctic circle. He has one son named Ívar Ingi and is married to Jóhanna Ósk Jensdóttir.
